Herman Nomination Hanging

Senate Republicans met with Clinton administration officials late Friday to discuss the announced executive order on labor agreements for federally funded contracts.

Republicans are holding up the confirmation vote of Labor Secretary-designate Alexis Herman until President Clinton withdraws the order.

At the two-hour meeting, Republicans gave administration officials a list of questions about the executive order, an aide to Senate Majority Whip Nickles said today. The Republicans expected to hear back from the administration late yesterday or today.

"The feeling is very strong [among Senate Republicans] that until this issue comes to a satisfactory conclusion, the Herman nomination will not move forward," the Nickles aide said.
