White House Staff Changes

Incoming White House Chief of Staff Bowles today announced several staffing changes.

John Podesta, a Georgetown University professor and former White House aide, and Sylvia Mathews, chief of staff for Treasury Secretary Rubin, will become Bowles' deputy chiefs of staff. Victoria Radd, now deputy communications director at the White House, will become Bowles' own chief of staff.

Rahm Emanuel will replace departing George Stephanopoulos as a senior adviser to the president. Jim Steinberg, now chief of staff to Secretary of State Christopher, will become deputy national security adviser, while Gen. Donald Kerrik, now a Defense Intelligence Agency official, will become deputy assistant to the president and manage the NSC's daily operations. Doug Sosnik, currently White House political director, also will become a counselor to the president.
