Smile! You've Got a Virus!

Many employees in the Environmental Protection Agency's mid-Atlantic region saw a pleasnt little smiley face when they turned on their computers last week. Unfortunately, the face turned out to be a symptom of a computer virus that destroyed some or all of the data on the affected computers.

According the the Associated Press, EPA had to shut down one of its computer networks because of the virus, causing loss of electronic mail and word processing. The agency's national databases of information were not affected.

Several EPA offices in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Maryland and other states were hit by the virus.
