Women, Minorites Gain SES Slots

Women and minorities now hold more Senior Executive Service (SES) positions than ever before, data released by OPM shows. Women now represent almost 20 percent of the SES and minorities nearly 12 percent.

The Education Department has a higher percentage (42 percent) of women SESers than any other major agency. The Social Security Administration has the highest percentage of minority SESers (36 percent).

OPM reported that the percent of women in the SES governmentwide jumped from 12.7 percent in 1992 to 19.7 percent this year. The percentage of minorities showed a more modest gain, rising from 8 percent in 1992 to 11.7 percent in 1996.
