A Taliban suicide bomber killed three members of the U.S.-led coalition in an attack outside a U.S. military base in Kabul on Tuesday.

The blast targeting an international convoy rattled nearby buildings and wounded five other soldiers and more than a dozen civilians, according to reports. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred just a couple hundred yards from the U.S. embassy.

The nationalities of the slain soldiers were not immediately disclosed.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul confirmed the attack in a Twitter post Tuesday morning:

The Wall Street Journal noted that the bombing interrupted a "relative lull" in insurgent attacks in Afghanistan. A separate attack in the eastern part of the country killed another coalition soldier, bringing the total 2014 death toll for NATO troops in Afghanistan to 59, with at least 42 of them Americans, the Associated Press reported. The second killing may have been an insider attack conducted by an Afghan soldier.
