Navy Yard Closed Again on Wednesday

Employees can access the base to retrieve their vehicles starting at 9 a.m.

The Washington Navy Yard will remain closed to most employees for the second consecutive day Wednesday after a shooting on the base Monday left 13 dead.

The base is still an active crime scene and only “mission essential personnel” should report to their offices Wednesday, Naval District Washington announced on its official Facebook page.  Essential personnel are determined on a command basis; other employees were encouraged to telework.

The Navy Yard is currently on Force Protection Charlie, the second highest condition, though the department is working to transition to Bravo, which is one notch lower. Several buildings on the base will remain closed entirely -- including 197, where the shooting took place.

Many employees were forced to leave their cars on the base Monday, but they will be able to retrieve them starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.

“Please be mindful that there is going to be a rush trying to retrieve vehicles tomorrow so please plan on coming at different times,” officials warned.
