Thousands of civilian personnel at Defense Department schools and commissaries will be furloughed because if across-the-board cuts from budget sequestration remain in effect, the Pentagon said Monday.
During his daily press briefing, Defense Press Secretary George Little told reporters that teachers and workers at commissaries could face one-day-a-week furloughs because of sequestration.
Little said the department was doing its best to ensure that the Department of Defense Education Activity schools maintained an accredited school year through the furloughs, though he noted it would be difficult. He added that summer school would not be affected by sequestration.
“We’re mindful that we need to protect the education of military children,” Little said.
