Defense Employees Break Charity Record for 9th Straight Year

Defense Department employees set a new contribution record for donations through the Combined Federal Campaign, according to the American Forces Press Service.

During a ceremony on Monday, Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said 30,000 of the department’s employees had contributed $15.2 million dollars to the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area in 2012.  Several of the service branches, including the Army, Navy and Air Force raised $1 million each.

AFPS reported that 2012 was the ninth consecutive year Defense set a fundraising record, and Carter said that the donations would help 4,000 charities around the world. Carter noted the contributions came even as Defense employees faced an uncertain future with looming budget cuts and possibly furloughs.

In 2011, the CFC-NCA raised nearly $64.5 million from the 121,000 Washington-area federal employees. Full results of the 2012 campaign will be announced in mid-March.
