Two U.S. Navy vessels collided off the East Coast on Saturday afternoon during routine operations, the Associated Press reports.
A submarine, the USS Montpelier, and an Aegis cruiser, the USS San Jacinto, collided around 3:30 p.m. in what Pentagon officials called a “rare” accident.
“We have had circumstances where Navy vessels have collided at sea in the past, but they're fairly rare as to how often they do take place,” Lt. Commander Brian Badura of the Fleet Forces Command told the AP.
Though the extent of the damage to the two vessels is unclear, the Pentagon said no one was injured in the accident. An investigation is under way to see what happened.
Both vessels are based in Norfolk, Va.
