Border Patrol agent killed in Arizona

An agent with Customs and Border Protection was shot and killed in Arizona on Tuesday, CNN reported.

Another agent was injured, but the injuries were not life-threatening, Border Patrol spokesman Brent Cagan told CNN.

Federal and local investigators are looking into the circumstances of the attack near Naco, he said. The agent killed Tuesday was the third to die on the job this year, and the 14th killed since 2008, according to CNN.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa R-Calif., released a statement Tuesday offering his condolences for the lost agent.

“This shooting is a tragic reminder of the dangers the brave men and women who guard our borders face every day,” Issa said. “My prayers are with the family of the agent who lost his life today and his wounded colleague.”

Issa has aggressively pursued an investigation of the Justice Department’s botched Fast and Furious operation, which has so far resulted in the resignation of two senior Justice officials. In 2010, another Border Patrol agent was shot and killed, and investigators found that weapons from the program were used in that attack.
