NYC suspect arrested in plot to attack government workers

Jose Pimentel is thought to have been targeting government offices, including post offices.

A 27-year-old man from Washington Heights, N.Y., has been arrested in New York City, Mayor Bloomberg said in a press conference Sunday night.

Facing terrorism charges, Jose Pimentel is suspected of planning to plant bombs in government offices, including post offices. He's also suspected of planning attacks on police cars and targeting members of armed forces returning from abroad.

Bloomberg said Pimentel, who was taken into custody Saturday, is an al-Qaeda sympathizer and was inspired by Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed Sept. 30 in a U.S. drone attack.

"The suspect was a so-called lone wolf," Bloomberg said. "He was not part of a larger conspiraces eminating from abroad."

Authorities have been tracking Pimentel since May 2009.

The New York Police Department's Intelligence Division was involved in the arrest, according to the Associated Press.
