Panel OKs nominee for Pentagon acquisition post

If confirmed, Ashton Carter would take over weapons buying at a time when President Obama and Capitol Hill leaders are pushing for major changes in the way the Defense Department does business.

The Senate Armed Services Committee Wednesday approved three nominees for senior Pentagon posts, including Harvard professor Ashton Carter to be the Defense Department's top acquisition official.

If confirmed by the full Senate, Carter will take over the Pentagon's weapons buying at a time when President Obama and senior leaders on Capitol Hill are pushing for major changes in the way the department does business.

The committee also approved James Miller to be deputy under secretary of Defense for policy, and Alexander Vershbow to be assistant secretary of Defense for international security affairs.
