GAO: Congress needs detailed cost data on military programs

The Pentagon could provide Congress with more cost information on military acquisition programs before lawmakers deliberate on authorization and appropriations bills, according to a GAO report.

After a review of all major defense acquisition programs between 1996 and 2003, GAO determined the Pentagon could give members "more complete" information on the cost of each program.

It also found the Defense Department could be more timely in reporting to Congress that it has "rebaselined" or changed the goals of individual programs.

The department said GAO's assertions were "overly harsh" and subject to misinterpretation.

DoD said in its response to the report that members have not requested such specific information.
