A year ago, employees of the Army personnel office fought their way out of the burning Pentagon. Now they're still trying to rebuild their lives and work.

One year ago, the lives of a small group of co-workers and friends were forever changed when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon just one floor above their offices.

A decision to reschedule a meeting, pass up another cup of coffee or linger in conversation at a colleague's desk would have unimaginable consequences for the managers and employees of the Army's personnel office.

For the cover story in the September issue of Government Executive, Katherine McIntire Peters interviewed the survivors of that office, and tells the story of friends and colleagues lost, of injury and recovery, of the twists of fate that brought violence and tragedy to a close-knit group of federal employees.
