Why Public-Private Partnerships are Essential for Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity

Cyber threats to U.S. critical infrastructure continue to grow in number and sophistication. To mitigate these threats, government and industry can work together to develop a healthy information sharing partnership.

As the federal government rushes to shore up cyber defenses, U.S. critical infrastructure stands out as a major vulnerability. Because the private sector owns the vast majority of critical infrastructure, securing the nation's vital physical and virtual systems in cyberspace requires an extensive degree of public-private collaboration. The National Institute for Standards and Technology's February 2014 cybersecurity framework marks progress on this front, but information sharing is still far from desired levels.
