Welcome to the Cognitive Era

June 1, 2017
8:30am – 3:50pm

More data was created in the last two years than in the history of humankind, and data keeps growing exponentially. Organizations and industries aren’t always able to analyze and utilize it effectively, but in the new era of cognitive computing, the opportunity exists to ingest massive volumes of data, extract insights and transform government. Commonly referred to as artificial intelligence, cognitive computing – or augmented intelligence – has the potential to reveal insights so that government can do what it does best: focus on mission outcomes.

Join us for the 2017 IBM Government Analytics Forum Livestream and begin your journey with advanced analytics, cloud systems and cognitive computing. Gain insights from government and industry experts on the vision for a cognitive government. You’ll gain insights and best practices you can employ today as we co-create and transform government to:

  • • Improve citizen engagement and experience
  • • Realize the digital future of defense and intelligence
  • • Modernize IT and reduce operational costs
  • • Build government’s data science knowledge base
  • • Design an open government that inspires innovation

Agenda

8:30 - 8:45 AM

Welcome and Introductory Remarks
Michael Falkowski, Director, Analytics, US Federal, IBM

8:45 - 9:10 AM

Transforming Government in the Cognitive Era
Samuel J. Gordy, General Manager, U.S. Federal & Government Industries, IBM

We've entered the cognitive era - when humanity and technology converge to enable new insights from massive amounts of structured and unstructured data. Data analytics and cognitive computing can address many U.S. federal government challenges by extracting knowledge from data for better decision-making; enhancing mission outcomes and operations; uncovering and mitigating threats, and more. In this session, we’ll define cognitive computing, explore its relationship with advanced analytics, and identify its potential to reinvent government.

9:10 - 9:35 AM

Morning Keynote
Dr. Jason Matheny, Director, Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity

In the realm of national intelligence, humans are incapable of quickly gathering, understanding and contextualizing the massive amounts of data, thus, bridging the gap between human understanding and technology is vital for the future of the security in the United States. The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) seeks to identify new developments in emerging technologies like machine learning and advanced analytics to maintain the U.S.’s technological edge and strengthen national security. During this keynote session, IARPA Director Dr. Jason Matheny will highlight R&D efforts in machine learning and AI, explore how agencies across the government are incorporating analytic capabilities into their mission strategies, and discuss the profound impacts these new technologies might have on the future of national security and intelligence communities.

9:35 - 10:15 AM

The Value of Advanced Threat Analytics Panel Discussion
Brian Done, Cybersecurity & Communications Deputy Chief Technology Officer and Chief Architect, Department of Homeland Security
Jeff Maille, Deputy Director, Insider Threat Office, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency
Matt Olsen, President, Business Development, IronNet Security and Former Director, National Counterterrorism Center
Dan Chenok, Executive Director, IBM Center for the Business of Government (Moderator)

With a threat landscape that is constantly evolving in both scale and complexity, big data and analytics is enabling agencies to better protect national security, agency-critical assets and personnel. From identifying and combating insider threat and user fraud to preventing the next cyber breach, data is a critical asset to agency security architectures. This panel will highlight how federal government agencies are implementing data-driven insights to prevent, detect, and mitigate advanced threats.

10:15 - 1:00 PM
