Early Outs Extended

You've got until the end of the year to take early retirement if you're eligible, the Office of Personnel Management announced this week.

Employees would have had until the end of September to take early outs, but OPM extended the deadline until Dec. 30 to "help agencies do a better job of planning," an OPM spokeswoman said. The extension also opens the early retirement option to people who will become eligible later in the year.

To qualify for an early out, you must have completed at least 20 years of service and be at least 50 years old, or have completed 25 years of service regardless of how old you are.

Employees under the Civil Service Retirement System will have their pensions reduced 2 percent if they take early outs. Those under the Federal Employees Retirement System face no such reduction.
