House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said Tuesday he expects Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., to ascend to the chairmanship of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, succeeding the late Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., who died Monday.

Hoyer noted that Dicks was second to Murtha in seniority on that committee, calling him "an extraordinarily able member of the Congress of the United States, very well grounded in defense policy, who has served on that committee for well over two decades."

"I believe he will lead that committee very ably and effectively, and will be a very strong voice on behalf of national security and our men and women in uniform," said Hoyer.

COMMENTS

  • While we may not have agreed with Murtha, at least he was a military veteran having an appreciation for the sacrifices and inconveniences of being military. Does The Honorable Dicks have the real qualifications or is he just ascending because he is senior?
  • So this committee remains under the control of the Democrats, does this mean the libs will stop pointing at the Republicans and scold them for the massive military budget each year which eats over 20% of the budget? Who do we blame for the 56% that goes to entitlement programs? How about the 5% to pay interest payments to China for borrowing money to fuel this mess?
  • The airport goes with the job. Also where else will he land the USAF VIP 757 he will demand for travel. He will need lots of trips to visit his earmark projects that he is now entitled.
