  • Agencies can save on real estate through a program of "hot desking". Simply put, you can have five employees working at three desks, a savings of 40% on real estate, HVAC, office furniture, etc. If five employees telecommuting two days a week, they work in the office three days a week, which is a total of 15 office-days. By staggering their schedules, you can keep three desks fully occupied while supporting five telecommuting employees. Try it. You'll like it. It's also not clear how teleworkers can save on daycare and eldercare (unless you mean pre- or post- workday care). At least in my govt agency, a teleworker cannot be actively caring for another person while working. For productivity's sake, I hope that's the case in all govt agencies.
  • It is nice to know at least one government agency is prepared. Maybe most of these workers are only able to work two days per pay period from home rather than six as reported but the capability is now there and can be used. Great news.
