Contractors get another reprieve from E-Verify rule
The Obama administration has again delayed implementing a rule requiring federal contractors to verify their employees are legally able to work in the country, according to a notice in Friday's Federal Register.
Under the rule that was first proposed under the Bush administration, contractors would have to verify the legal status of their workers using the E-Verify system, an Internet tool that checks Social Security and immigration databases.
The rule originally was to go into effect in February, but the Obama administration delayed it until May 21, and now until June 30.
According to the notice, the most recent delay is needed "in order to permit the new administration an adequate opportunity to review the rule." But House Judiciary ranking member Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said the move "slights American workers."
In a statement, Smith said: "Delaying implementation of this rule again insults citizen and legal immigrant workers. The purpose of the rule is to ensure that individuals working for or contracting with the federal government employ legal U.S. workers, not illegal foreign workers."

- This is NOT a partisan issue. In fact, Pres Bush (last one) while at Ground Zero after 9-11 promised to close all loop-holes and means why which illegals enter the US or overstay. Never happened....nearly 10 years later. J. Georgino Posted April 21, 2009 10:24 PM
- Another fine example of how NOT to lead by example. The federal government should be leading the way and setting the example to require verification of the right to work. It's good that immigrants WANT to come to America, BECOME LEGAL, and work (the ones that do), but this problem is just HUGE. by the way I found a comment last night on the internet while surfing that said dhs leader is just doing leftists' political bidding, supporting illegal immigration. link was... i think... something like... twitter . com/firenapolitano or ... something like that. had the term firenapolitano in it. just saying. bad move to not enforce American laws, so obviously. - In response to Onger...it seems you missed the point of the system. Illegal immigrants "buy" social security numbers and drivers licenses (identity theft). Employers do not have the tools or resources to find out if these social security numbers and/or drivers licence are legitimate or not. The e-Verify system is providing that tool. No system is 100% accurate. Remember, a software program is only as accurate as the people who are providing/inputting the data. A 5% error ratio is minimal when you look at the benefit of ensuring lawful, taxpaying citizens are securing employment rather than your tax dollars being paid to someone who not only is causing a nightmare for the person who rightfully owns that stolen social security number but is also sending all of the money they illegally earn to their home economy instead of contributing to the one paying them.
