Michigan One of Many States Digging Out From Big Winter Storm

A Detroit-area mayor and a skier rope-towed by a SUV intersect on live local news coverage as cities declare snow emergencies.

In some high-drama during live local television news coverage of a winter storm, the mayor of Warren, Michigan, was being interviewed Sunday night just as a mobile news crew was capturing live footage of a SUV rope-towing a person on skis.

"It's horrendous, and that person will certainly get a ticket," Mayor Jim Fouts said while being interviewed on Detroit’s WXYZ-TV. "I wish there was a police officer in that area."

Well, there was. The live footage was from another Detroit suburb, Southfield and shortly later, local police there stopped the SUV and skier as the interview with the mayor continued. Watch the video from WXYZ-TV.

Like other portions of the Midwest and Northeast, southern sections of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula were impacted by the major winter storm, including the Detroit metropolitan area.

As the Detroit Free Press reports, the storm was the area’s third-biggest snowstorm in recorded history.

Municipal snow emergencies have been declared across the Detroit area and in Lansing, where the state government was closed on Monday. Major universities are closed as well, including the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, which canceled classes on Monday, the second time that’s happened since 1978, according to The Michigan Daily.

Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, in southwest Michigan, received up to 17-18 inches of snow, according to MLive.com. Wyandotte, near Detroit, received 16.5 inches.
