San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer admits that “America’s Finest City” doesn’t have America’s finest website. Creating a well-designed local government website is no easy task, so San Diego is trying to be as proactive as possible to make the redesign project as successful as possible.

San Diego has partnered with Code for America’s local affiliate, Code Across San Diego, to engage key stakeholders in the city to plot out a sensible path forward for the website, including connecting with smaller local vendors who might be scared off by the normal request-for-proposal solicitation process.

As for the redesigned website, “it’s got to be accessible, it’s got to be usable, and most importantly, it has to be comprehensible to all San Diegans,” Faulconer said in a Google Hangout he hosted on Wednesday.

While there are already a lot of ideas on what should be part of the website, there is already one important measure that will be used to assess the project’s long-term success.

“For governments, we don’t want people to stay on the site for very long. . . . Increasing the number of transactions and the speed at which people can do them, that’s probably is the key metric for us,” Jeffrey Johnson, Code for America’s San Diego brigade captain, said during Google Hangout. “We want people to get in, get done and get back to their lives.”
