Government at Work: Battling Bird Flu
Since 1997, dozens of humans have contracted avian influenza. Of particular concern is a subtype known as H5N1, because it mutates rapidly and can cause severe disease in humans -- raising the specter of a global flu pandemic. In 2005, several federal organizations launched an interagency initiative to address such a prospect. Two key agencies in the bird flu battle are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Geological Survey.
