The Defense Department has frozen spending on large conferences and related travel, pending further review, according to Federal Times.
The directive, signed June 3 by Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter, is a follow up to President Obama’s May order calling on all federal agencies to cut travel costs by 30 percent for fiscal 2013.
Carter put a hold on all upcoming conferences expected to cost more than $100,000 until military service chiefs review every event to ensure its relevancy and necessity. Future conferences with a price tag of more than $100,000 will require approval from top Pentagon officials.
