I'm almost 60 and see Obama as a inept novice in a very difficult time. His stimulus is a failure when compared to Pres. Carter's CETA programs which had employed 800,000 in his first 8 months. We've given our manufacturing to a murderous regime of chinese communists setting the stage for revolution in the USA when unemployment hits 20%. China doesn't care about EEO/Whistleblowers/women in workplace. Wake up! They're laughing at what suckers we are. Obama is the first Pres ident that could forcefully remove drugs from urban neighborhoods, but he's not sharp enough, plus he let's the Jewish guys lead him by the nose.

I have an idea STOP!! There is only one race in this country that has a legitimate complaint and that is Native Americans. All of us can go back to whatever country we came from but these people had their country taken from them and they have no where to go. This my fellow Americans is a fact we all have to live with. So just stop!! with all this rediculious brow beating of each other and lets be abit more compassionate to those we stole this land from. Look to the future not the past.

You are witnessing the birth of a new minority in America. The white male. It has been years in the making but its time has arrived. Now we see "news" reports celebrating the fact that doors are being closed to opportunities for WM's. I must have missed all the meetings over the last 40 years when the WM's were offering to share all the wealth with me.

Just as an FYI - White women are very under-represented in the Federal government compared to the private sector. I wish White men (and EEO offices) would wake up and realize this!
Diversity is NOT required by law; it is an invention of the private sector. The Fed govt is only required to ensure that there is equal opportunity and no discrimination. But if you don't hire White women, you don't hire Hispanics, and you don't hire people with targeted disabilities, how can you say you are not disciminating against them?

What this tells me is our new president is a racist. rather than hire the talent he's obsessed on racist views

It's humorous that this article cited Cheney's 'experience' in the corporate world (as if he really earned the title/job that was handed to him at Haliburton by a cabal of real corporate execs).
The fact of the matter is that he was literaly handed the job simply because the real power brokers and parasites on the American Eagle thought (correctly) that he was connected enough within DOD to ensure that Hailiburton would get billion dollar contracts to sling hash to the troops under the guise of 'protecting' warfighers time to do the fighting. Yea, right, and $$$ had nothing to do with it.....
And the other self-placed fact and albatros around Cheney's neck was his role as the supposed Chair of the surmised VP selection committee for Shrub's initial election, 'er I mean appointment by the US Supreme Court.
As we all painfully remember, this man had the audacity to SELECT HIMSELF as the VP running mate.
Are all of you hanger on dead ender wanna be necons blind or just plain too stupid to the fallacy of the entire failed chicken-hawk infested fauz tough guy 'bring 'em on' Shrub administration?
It was Cheney all along! And the neocons got the near puppet POTUS they needed so Cheney and his hanger ons could do their bidding!

I think it amazing that in order to reach this "diversity" level the reported is telling us to exclude Bush appointees. Just exacly what does that mean, with the Bush appointees there is more diversity? Why do we need a comparasion of what was before, oh that's right, we got state elections coming up! Why not strive for quality and STRONG leaderships not disparity?

You do not have to be a minority to have a different background. Are we presuming that all minorities are disadvantaged? Does everyone think that white men are all born rich and privileged.....I am for diversity but good grief.

As federal employee and a 30-something white male, I am generally glad to see the diversity increase across all levels of government - and in industry too for that matter. We are a diverse country and our workforce, at all levels, should reflect that. I wonder though, when, say 10 years from now, I'm told that I'm not "diverse enough" to be in ____ position, if I'll feel the same way. Diversity is a good thing, but there is a point at which it just becomes descrimination against the majority vice the minority. For now I'm going with the positive outlook that we won't let it get that far...
As for the ratio of white males in the population, according to the 2000 census, the US is 77% white and 49% male. Er go, 38% white male (yes, you statiticians, I took some liberties here). Therefore, the "49% white male" rate in the White House is still within the demographics of our great Nation.

To Bill:
Which of the President's top advisors would you consider to be unqualified? The idea that promoting diversity and promoting competency are somehow mutually incompatible is perhaps one of the most ignorant and indefensible comments I have seen lately.
-

Only 38.4% of the (public) civilian labor force is White male, so the Obama administration does not yet reflect the general public. I don't see this article as attacking White men, it's just illustrating efforts to create a better balance. I think we need to recognize that we can have qualified leaders AND an Administration that includes and listens to viewpoints from all sectors. The two are not mutually exclusive.

We are struggling in the name of diversity. In my opinion, we should ensure that the workforce is provided with appropriate educational background that can promote an incleased understanding of behaviors that foster an inclusive workforce environment. I wish our management can think towards this line.

Diversity is the code word in current times for reverse discrimination. Forcing the unqualified to the top \could result in disaster. Let's just promote and appoint the most qualified.

Given this story, I wonder how John Morton became Assistant Secretary of ICE.
I know - white males are now considered minorities within this administration!

"In the last administration, the hack-to-wonk ratio was dangerously high. In this one, wonks have the upper hand." Democratic Leadership Council CEO Bruce Reed, on the makeup of the Obama administration.
Maybe one of the dumbest statements ever.
-
81018
I'm sure that most Americans are more concerned about their competency to perform their jobs, instead of their "diversity".
-

Yea, if they can eliminate the veteran's preference, they can increase the number of women at larger rate. Now, remember young men, you are still responsible for registering for the draft...yea, I know we presently do not draft, but we still require registration.

In my experience, a "think tank" either consists of a bunch of overeducated individuals with no practical experience, or a bunch of "good ol' boys" with no practical experience. But that's just my opinion...

Mr. Barnes has provided a very good news article on the diversity of the Pres. Obama administration. Important for the primary need for the American people to learn what is going on in DC because few really know the facts. More importantly the positive changes that include diversity, technology, and open communication with the American people will not only impact this nation now, but will spread to other countries and on to positive change on the global scale. In the critic comments on specific appointments, we can examine the positive and the negative which is expected. The diversity has been a positive and good change already for the benefit of the common people; the work force and backbone of America. Special thanks to media news such as the gov exec and open reporting as in Mr.Barnes article, to get this needed information to the people.

Glad to be an American once agaig...

I wonder what % of the population is composed of white males as compared to their representation in this administration?
-
80979
Here is a diversity idea; Offer buyouts to whitey. At least 50,000 - not the normal 25,000 buyout amount. This white woman will be the first in line.
-

Why is it ok to denegrate what the white male has done for this country? If this article celebrated the profiling and discriminatory actions against any other group like Mr. Barnes did to the white male, there would be outrage. The fact that "white guys" are being excluded is not cause for celebration. To be colorblind does not mean you reach out and lift only those individuals matching your own preferences . . . that's discrimination.

We should not forget that the previous Administration also had one of the most diverse Cabinets in history. Also, though President Obama might not be "flooding" the top jobs with campaign staff, he is filling senior posts with lobbyists.
I take exception to Bruce Reed's statment. Our agency is being filled with "hacks" - politicals who don't care about the agency's mission or workforce but only their own extreme agenda.
