For jdr - Where did you ever get the idea that the Federal Reserve is privately owned? The Federal Reserve and the Federal Reserve Board are government entities. Or did you never notice that the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board must be appointed by the President of the United States and approved by Congress?

Why is there even discussion on giving the Federal Reserve so much power when it is privately owned - it is no more part of the US Government than Federal Express is! Just because it has Federal in the name doesn't mean anything.

The US Dollar is the monetary unit used by the whole world. A strong, steady dollar is essential to the economies of the world. As far as I can tell, the Fed had sat by and watched to dollar grow weaker and weaker, while promoting policies to make it grow weaker still. And the Executive Branch wants to give the Fed even MORE power to screw up the worth of the dollar and the rest of the economy? Huh??????????

It seems a bit early to talk about adding responsibilities to the FRB. We can't even get this regulatory agency to audit itself. Until we know that the Federal Reserve is solvent and complying with accounting regulations and laws, no new functions should be added. The FRB never noticed the trillions in assets that were overstated by various financial entities over the past ten years.
