If anyone would actually READ Sunstein's legal articles about animals, you'll find out that he's not some "animal rightist," but rather an academic who is tackling important philosophical and practical issues we have in society. No serious animal activist suggests giving animals the right to vote or would ever sacrifice a human being at the expense of an animal. Be realistic. People interested in animal rights just want to make sure that we treat these creatures with the amount of passion they deserve (which is LESS than human beings, but MORE than we currently give them). Cass Sunstein is not going to take away your property or your animals (he eats meat! How radical is that?), OK? If you want to be scared of any type of person, be scared of those that RESIST protections for animals. If they're not willing to give one ounce of sympathy and protection to the most innocent and defenseless in our society, who will they fight for? Not you and not your children. Read Matthew Scully, Bush II's former speechwriter -- Christian conservative and fierce proponent for humane treatment of animals.

We certainly do not need people, like Cass Sunstein, who support the ideology of the radical animal rights movement. We do not need them in ANY position in ANY part of our government. As the main organization behind the animal rights movement, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has fraudulently solicitated donations, from an unsuspecting public, under the guise that they are rescuing animals and preventing cruelty. Actually these donations fund HSUS's LOBBYISTS working in every government, in every state, and in the US Congress, to totally END ANIMAL (especially dog & cat)OWNERSHIP.
POLITICIANS BEWARE!! The dedicated, responsible animal owners of America are taking YOUR NAMES and YOUR VOTING records to the polls with them. We WILL NOT live in a world run by "Nazi" Animal Rightists.

As one person, we must not forget Mr. Sunstein will regulate much more than animal issues. We do not want a person who is going to use the office to put forward an agenda...either animal rights or whatever else he might regulate. We are losing our constitutional rights in more than one area. This area is a big one. I, for one, resent an organization that lies on a routine basis having the kind of influence on our government that H$U$ has.

Dear Abby, Yes there are factory farms that are humane. And yes there are regulations against inhumane practices. I find it interesting that when spies for HSUS or PETA film a few such actions by deviants they hold the films instead of informing the owner who can stop this action. This type of action makes HSUS and PETA part of the abuse as they allow it to go on to meet their needs of raising money. Just as its against the law to not report child abuse it should be against the law to not report animal abuse. But that report should not be doctored or falsely made as many of PETA and HSUS reports are false. You need to read Animal Rights: The Inhumane Crusade by Daniel T. Oliver. Your misplaced passions will cause the deaths of many more animals as these organizations want to do away with all domestic animals. They are not concerned about animals as they have killed more than any one shelter by the laws they push and the lies they tell to our unsuspecting and kind hearted children. It is right to oppose Mr. Sunstein's nomination since animal rights radicals believe that any action is correct to get what they want even murder of the human race. Remember that for EARTH FIRST zero human population is the goal.

I think many of you have forgotten that this is not going to be the only regulations Sustein would be reviewing. It is often too easy to get side-tracked by one relatively small issue; but then again is that what they want you to do?
One thing I have learned is that getting angry over one issue only shuts your brain down from thinking about the situation as a whole. Come on people, this administration has to be relatively moderate in most of its actions to ensure re-election.

Thank God someone has sense enough to hold back the installation of an animal rights person from this position.
-
80388
Mr.Sunstein's animal rights views are not consistent with the proposed position. While animal wellfare is a vital part in the ownership of animals, animals are not humans and do not have the same rights as humans. The radical animal rights advocates are costing US taxpayers billions of dollars and countless hours of time that would be far better spent on necessary legislation and budgeting. We need to get our priorities straight here!

Dr. Rosset, you are lying. Factory farms are NOT humane!!!! In fact, I really question those who operate these farms actually enjoy torture of animals. They are latent Jeffrey Dahmers.....Factory farms are SICK and Disgusting. I have no problem with animals as food as long as their lives are decent. Factory farms do not provide decent lives to those animals that give their lives so we can live.
-
80378
I agree with Dr. Rosset on most of his points, except changing over to the Republican party. I think it would take an idiot to do that. I think a better thing to do is get involved with those of us in the Democratic Party that think along those same lines and change the party. I am a life long Democrat, BUT thay do make it hard to remaine that way, given some of there beliefs.

Animal Rights groups are crippling this nation and costing states right now hundreds of millions of dollars over lawsuits, legislation that's unenforcable, and the outlawing of honored agricultural practices that bring YOU your food cheaply. Chicken producers cannot produce eggs anymore in California, they have all left the state, because of the 'no cage' law they managed to get passed. This has cost California untold millions of $$. Lets take care of people first. We have plenty of poor and starving people.

80359
Mr. Sunstein's radical views and his ties to HSUS will definitely affect the way he carries out his duties. HSUS continues to try to infiltrate the upper echelons of our governmental workings and our elected officials continue to allow it to do so. I am sorely afraid that we are on the way to losing our right to own companion animals.

Anyone who has lived on a farm knows that if animals are not well cared for then you lose your farm and income. So, anytime you read remarks from someone claiming to have worked on a farm pushing the animal rights philosophy you can rest assured they are lying. This country is under assault from a cult known as animal rights activists that believe that all domesticated animals should be liberated from human ownership. To this cult that means the end of all domestic animals. As Wayne Pacelle so succinctly puts it "I will be happy when no more pets are born." " We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding. ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding." this is the goal of the Director of HSUS. These people believe that lying, using violence and pushing laws that deny your constitutional rights to property and due process, are justified to gain their goal of no more domestic animals. Mr. Sunstein as an animal rights radical can't possibly be trusted anymore than the other cultist who espouse the end of domestic animals, medical research or any use of animals. The ASPCA, HSUS, PETA, and other organizations like them having been taken over by these zealots who intend to turn America into a vegetarian state. They have stopped important medical research and if Mr. Sunstein is appointed you have no guarantee that he will not push his belief system onto this country. Democrats unfortunately have allowed an influx of this anti farming, anti meat, anti animal ownership animal rights radical agenda to infiltrate the Democratic Party. So much so that many democrats who do farm, raise dogs, show horses, raise cattle or any livestock are seriously considering or have already switched to the Republican party as they are beginning to see the devastation that this cult is imposing upon them state by state across this country. As former life long Democrat I have made that switch after seeing the result so many democrats being taken in or supporting this radical philosophy that means the end of farming, ranching, hunting, rodeos, zoos, circuses, and companion animals.

There are already existing laws on the books to deal with animal abuse or cruelty of any kind. We do not need more law or "regulation" in this area. We need enforcement of current law. Yes, we could clean up factory farming, but animal rights extremists are not the right people for that job. We certainly do NOT need a proponent of the radical Animal Rights agenda in such a powerful position--holding Mr. Sunstein accountable for his views is both necessary and fair.
-
80332
Animal rightists want to control the animal and agriculture industries--so, yes, they do have something to do with agriculture. They want to eliminate animal use! They want a vegan society. We simply don't need this type of person (Sunstein) in ANY regulatory position. Pres. Obama was heavily supported by HSUS/PETA; they now want their "pound of flesh" by being placed in positions where they can push their agenda.
-
80323
H$U$/PETA have an agenda - that is: to make everyone a VEGAN, no leather, silk, or wool cloth, no feather pillows, no dairy or eggs, no farm animals (won't need them), no service or draft animals, and NO PETS!!!
By the way - I'm a farm girl! Farmers keep their animals safe, healthy, and happy - they're livelihoods depend on it!
What's next? Chocolate and strawberries have feelings????
-
80319
Animal welfare (care) is not the same concept as animal rights (liberation). HSUS/PeTA use these terms interchangeably to confuse the public and legislators. Cass Sunstein is clearly anti animal ownership and anti hunting. No matter what he promises, he will follow the animal radical agenda as his writings state. Constitutional freedoms will be replaced by HSUS/PeTA vegan philosophy of no meat, no dairy, no leather, no wool, no silk, no insulin, no animal research (thus no new medications to fight both human and animal disease) and no animal ownership. Farmers and ranchers will be regulated out of business. That is bad for them and disastrous for America. Again, animal welfare is not animal rights.
-
80312
The position to which Sunstein has been nominated has absolutely nothing to do with animal rights. To hold him up on this issue is absurd. Pick an issue that is relevant for the job to which he has been nominated.
-
80308
I totally agree with Judy Kelsey. There is a big difference between animal rights and animal welfare. It's about time the government quit squandering our money on things that we already have laws for. I want to own a pet and I will decide what I eat and not somebody else.
-
80279
Mr. Sunstein can promise whatever he wants to get the position. Once there however, he can do as his history shows he will do. He is totally in support of HSUS; they support him. I for one believe that he will follow the dictates of his real party affiliation, that of HSUS/PETA. Mr. Sunstein is NOT a good choice by a president I voted for and am now questioning. Like Mr. President Obama, we all want to be able to choose the dog, animal, way of life, what we eat according to our own philosophy - Not that of the HSUS/PETA who is planning on forcing their mode of living down our throats.
-
80278
We need to not let the AR's dictate our constitutional right to own our animals. We need the head of this committee to not push the AR agenda forward.

Interesting that the radical group that is at the forefront of anti-animal legislation in all state legislatures in our country is named the Humane Society of the United States. SOUNDS good, eh? Sounds like they are the regulatory overseer of all shelters across the country, no? NOT. They do not own ONE pet shelter in the whole country (they have taken over 4 sanctuaries that are for wildlife and large animals only, but these are not open to the public, so what are they really doing inside those gates?); they are NOT associated in any way with ANY local shelters (who do all the work); they are not a regulatory body connected to any government, as they would like one to think. They FRAUDULENTLY ask the good-hearted American public for donations to "help the animals", when, in fact, they use this money to pay themselves AND their LOBBYISTS, that lobby against freedom to own or raise animals of any kind. How they can use their MILLIONS for lobbying activities, and remain 501c3 non-profit is absolutely AMAZING. Sunstein has sided many time with animal rightists such as this, and every reputable animal breeder such as myself is totally against allowing this man to be confirmed. It will lose millions of animal-lover votes for those that support him.
-
80269
With farmers, ranchers, hunters, fisherman and pet owners and breeders under the heavy-handed push for damaging legislation by the well-funded Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the last thing we need in this country now is someone in regulatory control who also believes animals should have 'rights' beyond the understood humane treatment most already believe in.
-
80265
People that have anything to do with the production of animals, for whatever reason, are aware that animal rights radicals have one goal: NO ANIMAL USE. Not only do they not want us to have pets, they do not want us to eat meat, dairy, eggs, or have clothing made from wool, or medicine such as insulin that is made from animals. They want us all to be vegans, and they are incrementally accomplishing this by swaying unknowledgeable politicians (on animal husbandry) by claiming all animals are abused, and the industries regulated severely. Regulated by who? People that don't know squat about animals? Sunstein is at the top of this radical list, and should NOT be confirmed. We need to keep America fair and accountable, not victimized by people/groups that try to take away our constitutional rights.

It would be nice to read a daily news article without hearing about one party not playing fair. This process has been going on in the House and especially in the Senate ever since I was born and will continue unless someone change the rules. I suggest that the Democratic Congress take the first step and follow their leaders direction "Change can happen". Maybe by taking the high road the other side will take active participation. Washington DC and common sense just don't match.

Having worked in agriculture, I can honestly say that the industry NEEDS regulation where animals are concerned. It is HORRIFIC what goes on on factory farms. If the American public actually knew, they would DEMAND better conditions. It is HORRIBLE! ( and I am a conservative.....). Time for the industry to become humane.
