"Obama: 'Only government' can solve nation's ills".
I think our Founding Fathers would vehemently disagree with this statement, as would many Americans today!

I'm from the government, and I'm here to help you!
To say that "only government can solve nation's ills" seems to be a call for socialism over capitalism. I've worked for the government for over 20 years, and while it has done some things well, it has also royally screwed up others!
The best solution to our troubles lies with the creativity and ingenuity of the American people, not the government!

I suppose these ideas are more constructive that Pres Bush asking us to go shopping to stimulate the economy. We have got to get beyond our collective selfish consumer society. Heaven forbid we cannot go into Wal-Mart and buy stuff we probably don't need. All the while, manufacturers want to compete so they are shipping jobs off-shore. Marie, I don't know that taxing companies that outsource will work, because the selfish comsumer will complain at the cash register. We have been through 8+ years of government outsourcing its function to contractors who have one major goal -- to get more and more contracts. I have to LOL when I hear that the same contractor who was supposes to assist the government in an area that help caused the current financial crisis has been hired by the Treasury to assist in the bail out. Amazing. Even the government is a selfish consumer, and will engage in a ponzi scheme to keep the money flowing. So, Pres Obama, I guess it's a good start, but a band-aid on the chest wound of a government that does not want to provide the basic functions of providing stability and security.

If anyone wants to fix this government then look no further than your own backyard. Start with your own towns ... why do such things as trash pickup and snow plowing have to start and stop with the town's boundaries? Why don't neighboring towns and suburbs get together and contract out regionally? At the state level, check out how your budget is divided: why does the penal system get the largest chunk and the orphans the least? Why are social workers the first to get cut, Connecticut, and why must there be a cop on overtime duty at every construction site, Massachusetts? Connecticut has two casinos kicking millions into the state treasury every month, yet that state is constantly in the red ... where's all the money going? If you want to solve the nation's ills, start small and work your way up the food chain ... it gets easier the further up you go.

Marie, I hate to say it, but, next to my pithy little post, yours is great! You hit the nail on the head. If you EVER decide to run for office, I'll vote for you. We need ALL the intelligent women we can get in our government to offset the Clintons and Palins of this world. Again, thanks for your cogent and illuminating post.

OK Don...here are a few "constructive suggestions". How about we stop letting companies farm out work to India, and other assorted countries, and penalize THEM with huge taxes if they continue to do so. And seriously enforce illegal immigration by performing more raids on suspected companies who hire them, fine the company then ship those people AND their relatives back to where they came from. I'm sure there are American citizens who would take those jobs, especially if we tighten up the welfare system so that people who can actually work don't just sit at homke and collect a "pay". And take a look at the welfare roles in general and weed out the illegals receiving aide and ship them back too. And how about not taking the money that the military wants to use to build up schools and assorted infrastructure in Europe and who knows where else and use it to improve OUR SCHOOLS and infrastructure here in the US - keep the money here. And, right here in the government, how about reducing the amount of money wasted on "training" TDY trips that could be accomplished through TVC, or PCS costs to hire people from across the continent when there are equally as qualified people in your own backyard. Yes, these things all require government intervention, but it doesn't require just doling out money, but rather having some backbone. Doubt I'll see it in my lifetime; really dount it in this new administration.

What is sounds like so far from this board is the advocacy for laissez-faire capitalism. The last time we practiced that, we ended up in the Great Depression. Even Keynes acknowledged that.
That said, Federal intervention does not necessarily have to mean massively increased spending. It is time for a major Federal restructuring to accompany the intervention. Offsets can be made.
While government clearly does not have all the answers, Wall Street has shown it cannot be trusted to work in the best interest of economic growth. It is a machine that is interested only in feeding itself. I am hoping to see fewer bailouts and more government investment in critical requirements (infrastructure, alt. energy etc.) that will spur entrepreneurial ventures and new companies springing up where the old models have failed.
Don't be such cynics. Try pitching in a few new ideas. Heaven knows we need some.

President Obama has some good ideals. But, some are a bit misguided. We don't need more government. We need our government to do more. Our government is so incredibly inefficient and mismanaged that the general public has lost faith in Federal, State and even local governments to get anything done.
We need leaders who can lead and act to clean up what goes on within before they start handing out our tax dollars. We don't need a bunch of long-winded, self absorb Congressional Representatives who don't seem to know who they work for. (Remember us, the tax payers?)
The people keep saying again and again, "Our government is broken and has lost it's direction. Fix it." Which part of that is so hard for the Congress and the President to understand?

The Government got us into this situation, the Government should get us out,but make sure the Government is accountable for their actions.

Have we lost our collective minds!? How on earth did the people in charge of national politics rise to power. Their understanding (with a few exceptions)of sound public policy and electing them to congress and the administration is equivalent to hiring a bunch of 5th graders to run a hospital.

Well, everyone says that we Americans are overweight, so here comes 'Socialism Lite', a non-filling and useless blend of PC, Socialism, Sharing/Caring, Diversity, Religious involvement in government, and Big Bird! Remember those great old terms that spelled economic control by the rich, ie. free market economy, capitalism, trickle down economics. Well, THEY didn't work. Remember when deep thinkers thought that if only government was run more like a business that it would be more efficient? OK, stop laughing now, 'cause the future is here, and it won't be pretty!

How is Mr Obama going to fix things when the majority of people he hired are from the Clinton administration? This just amplifies Mr Obama's inexperience and "Socialist" agenda. The government is incapable of fixing anything because it succumbs to pressures from both the political and industrial arenas. What else can one expect from a person with less than 200 days experience in the Senate and with no experience in running anything.

Government regulation increased the expected life span of each and every one of the posters on this site.
It defends your right to express your sour grapes.
There are major problems with government, but ending it is not the answer.
-

Why not? The private sector has failed the economy dismally.

"double alternative energy production"...."upgrade classrooms & laboratories in chools"..... "infrastructure repair projects & expand broadband access"...."modernize 75% of federal buildings by replacing heating systems and lightbulbs"...."inflate our tires to the correct pressure"... Sorry but I just had to throw that one in, it was afterall from another speech. So this is how we are "short term boosting to lift us from this recession and breaking the vicious cycles that are crippling our economy" Well I guess we will see how smart or dumb this guy really is ....

So only the Government can resolve the issue? How come Congress can't get anything passed? It's all talk and no action, and when there is action, it's designed to enhance the standing of the party, be it Democrat or Republican, or the status of the Representative or Senator. I seldom see any discussion about what is best for America. Social programs are not the answer, yet that seems to be where we're heading. We hear it all the time: if we do universal health care, everything will be great; if we cut taxes for one group and then raise taxes on another group, everything will be fine. Might I suggest that before any program is implemented both parties ask each other what is the goal of the program? What objectives do we hope to accomplish by the program? How do we know it is successful or not...how do we measure it? How do we fund it? The act of tossing money at lame programs or businesses is not going to work. But that seems the be the goal of Obama and the Democrats.

Great to see government-bashers are out in force, but seriously: I am interested to hear if any of Obama's critics has better constructive suggestions or solutions. Bush leaves office with U.S. unemployment at 7.2%. If Government does not step in, then who will? I don't expect any answers.

I am reminded of the Demotivator from Despair.com entitiled "Government." The cpation reads, "If you think the problems we create are bad, just wait until you see our solutions."

Here comes big government!

Didn't decades of overspending by both the federal and some state governments help get us to this state of economic affairs along with the feel good federal programs push to put people in homes they couldn't afford that were doomed to go into default. And wasn't it Congress's lack of action concerning the rising gasoline prices that tipped the whole thing over? Famous words that should scare us all, "we're the government and we're here to help you"!

Obama's statements that only government can provide the short-term boost necessary to lift us from a recession this deep and severe and only government can solve nation's ills is nothing more than fear mongering to convince the unwashed that SOCIALISM is the way to go. The best thing government could do is keep their nose out of the economy and let it take it's course. This twit, along with his other Democrat cronies will accomplish nothing during his term except to further flush the US down the toilet and make things even worse.

Spoken like a true lib. Which I guess is fine that is who the country voted for. But what has happened to our country that we expect the govt to pull us out of every trouble we have. We are on a steep slippery slope to socialism and everyone is running with our hands out.

Naturally ":Only Government can solve the nations ills." It was government that created them in the first place!
Lets talk about these energy efficient light bulbs. First they are only made in Communist China. Second that can not be thrown into the trash when the finaly burn out because they become HAZARDOUS WASTE. That is our briillian congress at work for America.
