Good post, Mr. Retired ATC. By now you must realize, as we all have, that a certain poster has NO government quals, experience, or ability to comment on the story/issues raised here or elsewhere. By my very 'nome de plume'my experience is evident. As previously stated in other stories, I respect each and every ATC who actually does the important work of keeping us pax safe! IMO the FAA (mis)management is the problem here. Maybe Obama can purge your agency of the political appointees. But that other poster (DK)is the unfortunate consequence of the First Amendment, just ignore him when possible.

Dan, Sounds like controller envy to me. The "Prima donna workforce" is about to return to the old contract until a new contract can be negoitiated......and I GUARANTEE a new one will be negoitiated. All of the union busting management people will soon be replaced and the skies will once again be safe. FAA management is about to get a HUGE wake up call.

If all management came from the controllers rank that would mean the majority would only have a GED and have difficulty reading and writing let alone doing math. The FAA does need to be revitalized 1st step eliminate the union contract and enforce discipline. The prima donna workforce needs to change

"brilliantly executed but poorly thought out concepts" ???? Now that is a a typical managenet response to this nightmare we are enduring in the FAA. Re-baselining, re-classifiying errors, removing 12 controllers in NY TRACON for not checking a box on the Class 2 physical, cutting pay etc......wake up dude..... it is called union busting and it is about to end. Thinkers like you are going by the way side. It will soon be 2009 not 1981...get out of our way.

As always before;this agency has a way to push things under the rug and lie to protect their back-sides. It is time to stop the finger-pointing and do the RIGHT THING for the for the saftey of the flying public. I will not fly again until the FAA gets (QUALIFIED MANAGEMENT PEOPLE)into positions of RESPONSIBLE management......

Heavy D, what does the IWR/contract have to do with your application of separation standards? You lost me on that one dude and yes I love Samuel Adams I have at least one a week. Delta Foxtrot I want to know facility you worked in because I think they are consuming the Samuel Adams on duty! Bottom line is this agency has a fine group of employees under going some very tough times due to brilliantly executed but poorly thought out concepts that like everything else this administration has touched has turned to crap just look at the economy this industry will end the same. Hang in there brothers retirement and Greyhound are near.

Euthanize the FAA, put it out of it's misery. Create a new and improved agency where ALL the top execs MUST be promoted from the ranks of the ATC's, no political appointees! Any exec found taking favors/money from the airlines goes to jail, period. THAT's my Christmas list, Ho, Ho, Ho!

The controllers that were involved reported the errors to their supervisors and that is were is was buried. If anything the supervisors need to be removed.....but knowing the FAA, they were promoted.

There hasn't been any mentioned as to what happened to the controllers that made this mistake. The traveling public has a right to know

The FAA is on the verge of a total melt down ! Controllers are working without a contract. 10 hour days, 6 days a week is the norm at the larger facilities with no end in sight. Most of the veterans are retiring because of the poor working condirtions and a pay cut The new traines that are being hired are either not qulified for the job or will take 3-5 years to certify. Any way you you paint this, it adds up to DISASTER ! Hopefully Jane Garvey will become the new head of DOT and get this fixed. She has done it before .

Having worked as an air traffic controller in the FAA for 25 years, I can tell you that the recording of operational errors has always been subjective. I've seen supervisors go meet airplanes at the gate to talk to pilots off the record to get them not to report near midairs. I've seen both controllers and management look the other way to protect each other. But in recent years, the pay for performance system had added to the reporting inconsistencies. I believe it is widespread and not just in the Dallas area. Since most senior controller pay was frozen under the last contract, the only way to get any additional "bonus" money is for the arbitrary perfomance goals to be met. If you have a "deal" you don't get money. And if you are in management and your people have deals YOU don't get money. Controllers have a pride in working as many aircraft as they can handle and provide a level of attention to detail in their work that you won't see in most other careers. But they are human and mistakes happen, especially when understaffed and overworked. Money should be taken out of the erro equation altogether. And contract negotiations need to be reopened to address the current pay inequities.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Dig a little deeper and you will find this very same thing happening at EVERY major airport in the United States ! Bush will do ANYTHING to break the controllers union including lieing to the flying public.

This is but one area of the Agency where inaccuracies can be found.
