The Department of State is the most mismanaged agency in the government. Once it took over USIS in the mid nineties, it recreated it as Public Diplomacy that only writes press releases and covers an ambassadors mistakes. USAID soon will go the way of USIS and be nothing more than a slush fund for ambassadors to achieve often misguided short term political goals.

i disagree with frank. if anything we need more state department spending. more robust diplomatic and "soft power" initiatives are needed esp considering we're engaged in a GWOT that requires more than military options. it's wasteful defense expenditures that need to be drastically tamed. far more is spend at the DoD than at State.

Just try to get a position with State! With overseas experience in the Middle East and an advanced degree in International Affairs, I could never interest them in me. I finally quit trying after the fifth attempt. Perhaps I will try again, they seem more desperate.

The State Dept needs to cut staff to save taxpayer dollars and put that money back into domestic programs. When the govt shut down several years ago because a CR was not passed, I remember that 99% of Americans were not affected by Embassays closing. These regal State employees waste taxpayer dollars. It is time to downsize overseas operations and go to regional Embassies.
