Return to Article: Candidates stress need to restore faith in government

Government employees are increasingly coming in off the street in part due to FERS it is possible to come in and then leave to the private sector again. We can make our mark in a few short years. We still see the old dead wood that I would have fired in the private sector on my second day on the job. Some include managment.

I couldn't agree more, so let's start publicizing some of the great things federal employees do (and there are plenty) instead of concentrating on the bad things.

Restoration of faith in the government is a lofty goal - take a look at Chicago and you see a model that kills the economy and favors patronage and nepotism. Special interests rule here and those very elements catapulted Obama to national prominence.
Neither candidate is pure or pristine, but seeing how Chicago gets things done, I'll put my support behind John McCain.

We have in front of us several enormous challenges: (1) upcoming commitments to SS, Medicare, Medicaid to the tune of ~$53 TRILLION dollars (see GAO rpts.); (2) rise of states willing to coerce others with energy resources / need to move away from petroleum; (3) loss of strategic manufacturing necessary to recover infrastructure after attack or natural disaster (making us hostage to other states in this area); (4) the virtual guarantee that automation has permanently removed most blue-collar jobs, even if manufacturing comes home; (5) the need, based on (3) and (4), to tear the education system down to its very foundations and rebuild it to prepare children to be responsible adult US citizens (NOT just consumers) in the 21st century; and (6) the inability to deal with any of this and the destruction of cohesiveness due to the ongoing civil conflict between partisans on left AND right, and their determination to use the power of the government to coerce others to their beliefs.
There's no discussion of any of this, though. If we are to have faith in the government, there has to be honesty at its base.

The greatest thing any candidate could do to restore faith in the government would be to restore fiscal responsibility. Unfortunately, this will take removing social programs and their entitlement funding, and controlling the expenses of the remainder of the government. Since so much of the taxpayers money is given to so many, the odds of that happening are slim to none. Europe has already learned that socialism doesn't work, and they are going in the other direction. We need to figure this out before we are totally bankrupt!!

If the political folks were serious in their concern for the lack of applicants for federal service thay might want to rethink slamming the federal woerforce in their cheap political shots every chance they get.

Another massive overhaul of federal agencies is in the works? Oh please, let us not go there again in the name of saving all of us from terrorism. Basically these two wannabes would tear up an existing structure in the name of change that they can turn around and claim as their legacy, albeit probably a lame one. The last overhaul that involved ripping government employees from one agency and shoving them hell bent into the DHS was NOT sufficiently discussed, examined, nor strategized, but it looked great on paper. Employees who worked in agencies with completely different missions were now asked to sport guns and look for weapons of mass destruction and terrorists. All of this served with a culture of fear on the side. Change should be beneficial to the tax paying public and also to the government employees who serve the public by undertaking the activities required by federal agencies - - not just to politicians who need to fluff up their campaign rhetoric.

The Republican smear machine is in full swing right now. Hopefully the American people can see through it and realize that if McCain is elected then they have given "W" a 3rd term. Shame on them if they want 4 more years of this.

Too bad McCain can only pretend he will change the executive abuses we have seen the last eight years. Obviously, McCain is only a puppet of the GOP head shed.

Wayward the people are in lines every day hoping to get a plum job in the gov. There is no problem with recruiting the problem is once they get hired how quickly the old hands quickly turn them into bureaucrats. In less than a year they will speak unionese, its not my job, when is my next raise or promotion, I'm not accountable and the list goes on and on

If McCain really believes this when his handlers write the next talking points for Palin they should make sure she doesn't trash government programs and take cheap shots at government employees.

I find the comments of both the candidates to be rather interesting. I wonder if it has ever occurred to anyone in the US Congress, etc., that people would be more inclined to trust the US Government if it had ever in its history shown the it COULD be trusted? After all, why should anyone in their right mind trust a Congress (not just THIS Congress, but practically ALL Congresses to this point) that passes laws that include provisions for exempting Members of Congress, etc., from those same laws? Why should anyone trust an Administration that has showed again and again that it feels that it is not bound by the Constitution? I do have to admit that the Judicial Branch has pretty much performed as it was supposed to, despite some uninformed people who claim 'legislation from the bench' when the judges insist on ruling according to the Constitution, instead of ruling according to the religious views of those same uninformed people.

Individuals would be inclined to take up federal service if they felt and knew that the purpose that they worked for was truly representative of America. It is difficult to see how the opportunist attitude of John McCain's campaign will inspire young people to believe that fact. The only thing I can see is let's profit by any means necessary. If it means backstabbing, playing to peoples fears, and being dishonorable then there will be a lot of volunteers. I am a veteran and where I would have followed this man anywhere, I am ashamed of this campaign and his actions.
