Return to Article: Retired generals advising Obama bring range of expertise

It's a no brainer that a majority of veterans would support McCain. After all they believe they shared a common experience. On the other hand the Obama supporters share an intellectual point of view that diplomacy trumps the tough guy approach. I'm the same age as McCain, and fought in the same war, he in the sky, I in the mud & jungle. He was shot down by technicians manning hi tech AA missiles. On the ground, my boys and I found the enemy every bit as tough as us with our superior firepower. In a ground war tough cancels out tough.

Oh, and those flag officers who support McCain are all doing it out of a sense of duty? Those of you making "sour grapes" and similar comments undoubtedly know nothing firsthand about these officers. For example, MG Eaton has impeccable integrity and a high degree of professional competence. You may disagree with their choice of candidate, but by impugning their motives without actually knowing this to be true, you show yourselves to be lacking in the same degree of character that you accuse them of missing. Sorry to disappoint you, but this time the Karl Rove playbook isn't going to get McCain to the White House.

Sure looks like a "sour grapes" vinyard, every one of these clowns probably thinks that he (she) should have been Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A sorry lot at best.

Admiral Richard J Naughton was the officer involved in the Naval Academy/sentry incident.
One of the things that terrifies me about the internet is how easily misinformation can be passed around. In this case, an apparently honorable admiral was slandered.

Obama = another potential Clinton
He would potentially do exactly what the GENs tell him to do, since he lacks any credibility (zero military experience).
And if the MOVEON.ORG types don't like it, where are they going to go?

What a motley crew! I have no respect for generals who, while on active duty, should have been leaders with the intestinal fortitude, a spine and courageous enough to stand up for their convictions. They owed it to those entrusted to their leadership. That quality in today's military is all but gone and there are few and far between who have the honesty, integrity and candor to speak their mind while on active duty. They find their conscience and wisdom without risk. As for me, these folks who now try to fly their flag with the wind are nothing but a sad bunch of power-hungry opportunists trying to regain their flag-officer days of pomp and circumstance.

With regard to Admiral Nathman - I don't believe that he is the Admiral that was involved in the incident mentioned. It would be worth a check by anyone that intends to use these comments.

Yeah - I wonder how many of these retired generals have been promised cabinet positions or other lucrative jobs under Obama - it figures. Believe me, these generals are not advising him out of the goodness of their hearts. They will be getting something in return. To me, they are using their retired general status to their own advantage and political or monetary gain. Shame on them.

Nobody I agree 100% go that young guy wasn't a very good president. To end the missile crisis he gave away the farm. So I would say we don't need another inexperienced guy in the oval office. He's already been on the take and he's only been in politics for 4 years

I seem to remember another gentleman that ran for president many years ago. He too was young and really didn't have much experience in international affairs. Soon after winning the election, Kennedy found himself in the middle of a stand-off between Washington and the USSR over missiles in Cuba. How about we give the young guy a chance? We're tried Bush types already and look where that got us.

All this is well and good, but if either camp can get retired Adm. William Fallon on their list of advisors, that camp will possess an instant, positive impact in their foreign policy and negotiation credentials.

Terrible story about Admiral Nathman. Makes you want to steer clear of anyone associated with the Naval Academy.

Retired USAF Maj Gen Jonathan Scott Gration, son of Christian missionaries and a former attender at Faith EPC, is a military advisor to Barack Obama.

Just goes to show you that Generals can make mistakes too!

Sounds like these Generals as a group are dedicated to seeing our Armed Services being led by someone other than another MBA-type disaster like Rumsfeld. After 8 years of mis-management, I hope a new administration will listen to their experience and common sense.

Not sure I would want any help from Nathman. He is the Admiral who ran the Naval Academy and got into a scuffle with a Marine security guard who did not recognize Nathman in his civilian clothes. Nathman was so insulted he tried to destroy the young Marine's career. In the end Nathman was forced into retirement over the incident.
