I would like to know how much of the travel has increased since the airlines decided to charge for baggage. The government should be exempt. As it is now, it varies by airline. Some only do not charge active duty military and charge government employees. This is a crock!

Has anyone compared the levels of travel between managers and staff? Our managers like to attend a lot of retreats and "meetings" while the staff has no money for site work or necessary training.

Has anyone researched how much of DOD's TDY costs were related to the required training for NSPS? Either instructors' TDY or the employee traveling to the training sites. Our agency spent a bundle on that in FY 2007, and that was likely repeated in other agencies. I continue to wonder about the ROI (return on investment) for what NSPS is costing DOD. Curious YA-2

95% of travel is not needed. VTC, computers etc negate the need. We have to many runway bugs.

A complete lack of analysis shown on Gov Exec's part here. DUH, DOD is the biggest agency with operatoins worldwide conducting wars in Afghanistan and Irq. SO WHAT? Does anyone expect them NOT to have the most travel spending? Can you please tell us something meaningful? Is travel spending per person in agencies and government wide increasing or decreasing? Are per trip costs increasing/decreasing? Has the change in the value of the dollar had any effect? Are destinations different? Did anyone ever tell you guys about the news maxim about dogs and men biting each other? Hint: Dog bites man, not news.

Great statistics, but not really very meaningful, since the relative numbers of personnel are not mentioned. This would mean something if it was broken out by Department, with the average per person, highest per person, and lowest per person listed within each Department. That would allow the readers to see the relative expenditures. After all, if a Department spends 10 times as much on travel as another Department, but has 100 times as many personnel traveling, is it REALLY spending more on travel?

The money that has been spent on establishing VTC capability, one would expect travel cost to decrease. I've personally seen government dollars wasted on travel when a VTC would've been suffice.
