CSRS 80% FERS lucky to get 35% FERS "gets" social security but from what I hear it's not going to be around much longer. TSP??? FERS is forced to "invest" (more like GAMBLE) in the markets if wanting a comfortable retirement while CSRS doesn't need to worry about it. Every retirement seminar I've ever been to says FERS is, in the BEST case, 1/3 lamer than CSRS. With all this 'more for less' labor I think FERS really got stuck holding the doo doo end of the stick.

Your statement:"The payment is eligible to be transferred to an Individual Retirement Account." Can I transfer the entire "Already Taxed" portion to a ROTH IRA and the "untaxed" interest earned portion to a regular IRA? If so, are there any "conditions" for qualification?

I am also under FERS and would also like to see scenarios for people who entered the government later, say age 40, and also how TSP/SS/FERS all works together and How Long Will I have to work anyway!? Thanks much for your helpful advice!

I have read your scenarios, but explain on it works under FERS with less than 20 years of service, but more than 10 years of service. Not everyone started out working for the government right out of high school, some of us came into the government at a much later date, where we may only have 10 or less than 20 years of service when we reach the retirement age of 65 or 66.

Thanx for the info. I'm under FERS under the special provisions for Law Enforcement..I can retire at ANY age after 25 yrs of service, which is Age 48 for me. Do I get penalized if I withdraw from my TSP at that age? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you, Ricky

Thanks for the information. I'm under FERS, and if I put in 40-something years of service, I'd be 80-something years old... Could someone please explain why FERS retirement is supposed to be so wonderful? It doesn't seem any better than some private employer retirement plans. Please help me see the light...!

The article keeps making a big deal of no 80% limit for the FERS employee. Just to be clear - a FERS employee would have to work 72 years to get to the 80% of their high 3 pay (80/1.1%). Yes, I know that we also get Social Security where CSRS generally do not. Of course, we can expect that the FERS retiree's will be penalized & taxed on taking their Social Security retirement if between their retirement/401K/other income they exceed a modest income. Please do an article on how all three "retirement systems" (401K/SS/FERS payments) work together for teh FERS employee - there is a lot of confusion (myself included) about what portion of my potential retirement income will be taxed and/or penalized. I would appreciate several senarios (i.e. 30 years age 58; 30 years age 62, 45 years age 67, etc.) that would equate the expected retirement income as a percentage of the high 3. Thanks for keeping us informed!

I'm assuming you have or will post similar articles but more directed to FERS benefits? As the percentage of FERS covered employees increases it would be nice to have some examples and suggestions related to FERS. Of course with the stock market like it is today some of us may not be able to retire, at least for a longer time.
