Thanks John and Dan for the explanations. Unfortunately they don't answer the question. Why does the U.S. spend $712 Billion? Defense is a good thing, being the best is a good thing. So those two require the U.S. to spend 48% of the world's military spending? Is that really for defense? Other countries can defend themselves for much less. Is it really good to spend 43% of the U.S. budget on military? "Social Programs" only take 2.9%, Dan. Perhaps you can breakdown the $712b for me so I can better understand where our tax dollars are going to defend us and make us the best.

We need to keep spending on military. China is spending tons of money on research and military upgrades (way more on a percentage of national income vs the US). Plus it is no secret that our military is in bad shape. Our equipment, while some of the best in the world, is rapidly aging, worn down, and becoming out of date.

Kurt said "Why is it that the U.S. thinks it needs to spend twice as much as the rest of the world in military, weapons, etc?"
Because we have the best Military in the world, and we want to keep it that way.

Kurt the answer is the constitution it says "to provide for the National Defense" the question you should be asking is why we are spending all that money on social programs, ie farm bill. That was never the framers intent they said "promote" which doesn't = money

I have just learned that sellout Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho) have successfully inserted the "Ag Jobs" amnesty components into a defense spending bill. Why is it, that this amendment has been accepted by the Senate Appropriations Committee and added to an Iraq War spending bill?
They could vote on the spending bill today or tomorrow. If the bill passes with this language included it will grant a form of AMNESTY to millions of illegal aliens working on farms.
