As a records manager,we have nothing but problems with records storage already. With BLM, we have a hold on destruction and shipping of records to records center. We would not have a place to store e-mail records. No money to rent additional space.People would have difficulty deciding on what e-mails need to be saved, and which eliminated. If a decision is made or rendered, the e-mail should be saved as a record.I am sure there are other offices who lack storage space also.Tough task.Good luck.

What exactly is being proposed? A lot of e-mail is junk (e.g. some mail from computer publications and govexec.com) or of transitory value (e.g. "I found a pair of glasses in the copy room, etc."). It's not worth keeping. Some criteria for identifying e-mail that has to be kept need to be developed, but the main factor in keeping valuable e-mail depends on the trustworthiness and discretion of feceral employees.

Anything you say can and will be used to prosecute you. Litigation by lawyers and never-ending investigations result in less productivity for the nation and will result in less service from government. This is not about better service; it is about lawyers and politicians and liars--all the same.

I love Waxman's take on bureaucracy, Gov't has to keep emails and so does the Executative branch but what about Congress?? Nope...
