20 days is totally unreasonable! I believe taxpayers need to understand that no one is sitting around waiting for a FOIA so they can have work to do. It is a collateral assignment for already overworked staff, and that means PRODUCTIVE work does not happen!!!

An important distinction remains with the passage of this bill - there is a statutory time limit on how long (usually 20 days) agencies can take before communicating to the requester the agency's determination to accept and process their request. There is no, and never has been, a statutory time limit on when documents will be provided. "Promptly thereafter" is what is in case law and DOJ guidance.
