Don't just count the new bridges to nowhere in the appropriations, what about the special interest earmarks that foist inefficiencies, remove management flexibiliites and other dumb operational requirements on the agencies - that the agencies have already objected to! Got to buy those campaign contributions somewhere.

Just wait--this do-nothing Congress will put all of the appropriations into an omnibus bill, and then they will load it up with as many earmarks as they want. That's the new, ethical, way of doing business!

The only fair thing to do is cut ALL earmarks. Any pressing and worthwhile program of a broad interest should be proposed and voted on as an individual bill. This of course would require the Congress to stay in Washington and work a more reasonable number of days per year and give the voting public more for the compensation package the receive.

Why am I surprised that individual members of Congress will go to war over their individual projects and sacrifice the national public interest in assuring that limited funding go to only the most urgently needed projects providing the greater public welfare? We sure are selfish about our spending priorities
