In response to Robert Brodsky's article "News + Analysis After Blackwater", my irritation flared! The article was better than most, fairly well written and mainly factual. However, as a spouse of someone employed in the overseas security business, I also get a little defensive. My husband is not a mercenary! He is an honorable man that believes in right and wrong. He is a decorated, retired infantry soldier that is using his 20 years of military experience in the civilian sector. He is not a gunslinging killer! Security for State Department employees does not equal mercenaries. Where is the outcry for those American Blackwater employees RIGHT to innocence until proven guilty? These are sons/daughters, husbands/wives, dads/moms working in less than perfect conditions to pay their bills (in America, mostly). If they are subject to charges, will the investigation and evidence follow American procedures? Will the crime scene be secured and detectives brought in to gather the facts? If not, then how can an American justice process apply? Most of the former law enforcement and soldiers I know working in overseas security jobs welcome rules and consequences for their less than honorable fellow employees. My question is: do most of American people conduct themselves as honorable in their daily workplace? The easy thing to do is fire the company. The right thing to do is make policy similar to US law enforcement officials that can be enforced in Iraq!
