There are many reasons why our TSO'S are sometimes less proficient in identifying test IED's than we would like. The dynamics of the workforce vary from one airport to another and even the stakeholders affect the security. For an organization barely 5 years old, I think TSA is doing quite well and I am proud to be in the workforce. To the naysayers and those who evaluate TSA from media excerpts and quips, I say meet and talk with TSO's at various airports; apply some critical thinking and seperate truth from hype.

One main issue is equipment. We're using the same equipment that was in place prior to TSA, and we're expected to 'see' components that are part of "..new testing bags" with items that are from a new generation of threats. Whose hands are tied?!

As a survivor of the gross stupidity that was, is and almost certainly will remain TSA, I can tell you that the lowest ranking screener knows where the problems can be found.
TSA is so fixated on form over function that there are literally thousands of deadwood mid and upper management who's jobs have nothing to do with air safety. If the organization would ditch all the deadwood and the eyewash programs, they could instantly upgrade operations.

I have heard only bad things about being a TSA. And yet I still have this desire to become one. I honestly want to make a difference in the safety of my country on a Homeland Security level. I would love to work in TSAs Rail Security area or something like CBPs Marine & Air department. Unfortunately too old for the Coast Guard.
I would like to use a TSO position as a foot-in-the-door to one of these other jobs but, not sure if that is a good move.
My comment on this story is I guess it will take a real intervention (or mistake) to get the attention of someone who can make sure that the TSOs have the right training. And I hope it don't come to that. Lets hope that the LA and Chicano fiasco raises the right eyebrows.

And you think this is surprising how? This is the standard for DHS/TSA. You think that for one second they care about the safety of the traveling public you are all mistaken. They don't provide the proper tools for anyone to do what they are designed to do. This is coming from a DHS employee.
