Its a great program. I've been a citizen for 20 years, worked in the US with a valid SS # for 17 years, have a US passport, a valid driver's license, never changed my name. And I got a non-confirmation letter, which the SSA cannot confirm even though I've shown a birth certificate, passport, driver's license, everything that was requested. I've been taxed every year by the IRS with no problem, yet the SS office cannot confirm I'm allowed to work in the US, which I've been doing legally for 17 years. Because our great SSA office cant locate my original records in Baltimore. So the window has expired and my employer by law is required to terminate my employment. By the way, I'm an attorney, trusted by the Courts of this country to protect its citizens, but not trusted by the SSA. great program...

The Illinois situation should be interesting because the arguments the government is advancing, that the federal scheme pre-empts local laws, cuts deeply into arguments that favor creation of local enforcement laws. The basic problem is that Congress created the 1986 law extensively regulating the I-9 process. Because the law is so specific, the regulations mirror the law. With all due respect to the government, the methods and standards used to enforce the law deviate greatly from law itself. I would challenge anyone to find a situation where a statute in and of itself is so specific, but the enforcement of the statute is so far adrift. It is no wonder that state governments and employers are so confused.

Hey if Illinois doesn't want to play its OK. Just shutoff federal funds for law enforcement and homeland security funds. Chicago was 1 of the cities whining they didn't get enough funds in 2006, so zero them out this year

I wish DHS/TSA would enforce thier on laws and regulations. I have reported that a current TSA/DHS Sceener used her position to help her family come the the USA, yet they have not returned and are now in the USA illegally. The employee supports them and some times provides refuge for them. What a joke she makes of the laws she took a oath to up hold.
