The southwest coast of Florida has always been susceptible to small boat access. Just in the past few days we have had more than 20 illegal immigrants come ashore. In the past year hundreds of illegal immigrants have made it ashore and more are coming. Our small maritime unit is really ill-equipped to deal with the situation. Our current method is very reactive in nature, simply because of resource constraints. If we could be a part of a new UAV watch system that identifies small boats and delineates numbers of passengers on board those small boats, we could intervene before they get ashore.

ADM Salemo speaks of a simple yet very competent way of doing an important part of Port Safety and Security. Also low cost!!! Ft Huachucha has had an active program for several years. A test project would only require a small team (5 or less) and could piggy-back on what the Army, Navy, USMC and USAF already have done. Drones (UAVs) can by lethal, or, for USCG use non-lethal (or both).
