Return to Article: House Democrats seek to restructure Coast Guard modernization

While my association with Coast Guard Forces prohibits me from identifying what that association is, let me say that the modernization of our services antiqated fleet is vital to all U.S. Maritime interests and that, like hiring a contractor to build a house, if the work is not done satisfactorily, the contractor must accept the liability for their own shortcomings. It's past the time for congress to become actively involved in what needs are necessary for a modern Coast Guard!!

The good news is that congress realizes the Coast Guard does not home-grow the talent necessary to manage such a complex system acquisition. (They should probably recruit externally from the Navy.)
The bad news is that Chairman Cummings is only interested in getting our money back from the failed patrol boat project. Lockheed and Grumman took perfectly good 110 foot patrol boats and cut them in half to extend them to 123 feet. It failed. So now, not only is the taxpayer out the money we paid them to do the work, we also lost the use of the 110 foot boats that are now worthless. It's the same as contracting for a room addition on your home and the builder destroys your home in the process. Would you only ask for your money back or would you want your home replaced, too?
