It surprised me that among the reasons why our addiction to oil is a threat to national security, the enabling of our enemies was not stated. The current high price of oil is allowing the increased belligerence from Iran, Venezuela and Russia.

Why don't the military services use the technology that's been around for sixty years to build conversion plants that convert tar sands and shale rock to oil? These areas are located in the Western part of the U.S. China has a great energy policy recently citing the fact they made a huge purchase of tar sands in Canada. Our leadership was given an outline by one of our greatest generals Ike Eisenhower. He stated that this country should not import any more than 20% of our oil. That was 55 years ago. Man, our leadership really jumped all over that idea. We started building SUVs that get 10 miles to the gallon. This not new technology, Nazi Germany did it; South Africa is currently doing it. If the reason it is too costly, our very freedom, and the American dream depend on it

The DOD can start by converting all military bases to solar and wind power. Perhaps more vehicles can use E85 or natural gas fuel to start.
