I was told that no credit is given for the 3-month training period, only the actual time of service after being appointed as a volunteer.

I was a summer volunteer while still in high school (~1968)for Headstart--it probably would only be six-nine weeks and I don't have any record of it. Could that possibly count. I don't understand paying back anything for "volunteer" service.

In my case, 2 years of Peace Corps service did count for leave

Does Peace Corp and VISTA service count towards your service comp date for leave purposes?

In 8/04, I paid a deposit ($114) for Peace Corps service 1973-75 and a charge for interest (90.00). Your article suggests that interest should not have been charged. True? I remain a full time CSRS employee.

On the Peace Corp time AFTER retirement you would have to come back into federal service, buy your PC time and then retire. I came across this info on the OPM web site. I was also looking at this as an option.

Peace Corps service must be credited towards CSRS or FERS prior to the retirement being processed. Federal retirees may volunteer with Peace Corps after retirement, but the service will not count towards the existing retirement benefit.

Can I retire out of the PC? I would like to "quit" now at 56 and volunteer -- do the PC time and then officially retire.

Excellent article! One question, though. Is credit given for Peace Corps service after retirement? I began receiving a CSRS annuity in 2002, and volunteered for the PC in 2003. If so, with whom would I apply. Thank you.

Does anyone know anything about counting Americorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) service toward retirement? I've been told that it does not count, but it seems as if it should.

This article talks about those who work in the Peace Corps before a federal career. What happens if the volunteer years are after retirement from federal service?

It seems to me that if there is going to be credit granted for service with the Peace Corps or VISTA, then credit should also be granted for service with other volunteer organizations with direct ties to Federal Agencies, such as the Civil Air Patrol and Coast Guard Auxiliary.
