Tip Off, good point regarding complexity! But our soldiers are going into combat using the IVIS computer link and many other techno gizmos. The helicopter took quite a while to develop, and many people doubted it's role in war. Same with the stealth fighter and B-2 bomber. I read all I can about these systems, but am simply a civilian like you, and no expert either. But sadly progress in warfare is necessary. The problem is that we are getting too good at the worst activity, war.

Being one of those ordinary people who love to watch and learn, I have been watching this piece of equipment grow and mutate over the years. The concept intrigues me but I'm always a tad leery of equipment that spreads to fill a void, i.e. not a plane nor a helicopter but something in between. These types of equipment always remind me of those folks who call themselves "jack of all trades, master of none".
The only real thing I can comment on it is that, in my humble experience, in combat the greater complexity, the greater the tendency for breakdown. I can walk away from a busted tank this might be a different story. That first step may be a doozy.
I hope this will not be one of those projects whose only benefit is to those it kept employed. I wish it (and the crews and ground soldiers depending on it) a lot of luck. Keep the info coming.

Sure hope this post gets published before "Taxpayer" jumps in to criticize this aircraft. While the V-22 is not strictly a helicopter, and has had it's share of developmental problems, what hasn't? Why do average people feel that they somehow know which weapons systems are good, bad, or unnecessary? But, just to repeat myself, superior weapons in the hands of brave men usually win the day.

Since when is the Osprey a helicopter? It's a vehicle that operates like a rotary wing and fixed-wing aircraft.
