The C-5As are not part of the C-5 re-engine and avionics moderization programs. Those airframes are just too old for those two programs to impact the C-5A's mission capable rate.
The C-5Bs are prime candidates to be updated to C-5M status, however, and the ability to lift outsized cargo is a vital national asset that the C-17 cannot fill.
There should be room for both re-engined C-5s and C-17s in the US lift inventory, given today's high mobility strategy.

I have worked on the C-5A here at Stewart since it came to us back in 1985 so I can say I have spent many years working and occasionally flying in it with good and not so good experiences but what I can say to all who ask, just try to keep up with us!
The C-5 is a great aircraft for it's size, loading capacity(better then the C-17),comfort with having forward and aft troop seating and kneeling capability which no other heavy lift aircraft has plus forward and aft loading positions.
I have to say there are things that need to be upgraded especially on the A model but the engines are its weakest area so why retire them, just give them new life like the KC-135s were given, modernize the avionics and internal components, let her do what the C-5 was meant to do,fly troops and cargo nonstop to places it needs to go safely and quickly.
