I would also like to know if the supplement is taxable. In EBIS there is a calculator for retirement. It shows the FERS Supplement in addition to the FERS retirement. The supplement is listed on a separate line from the taxable FERS annuity.

I just retired at the end of February at age 60 with almost 23 years NOT counting my 2 yrs. military time. Thus far I've received nothing but a very small interim payment at the beginning of April 2008. By the information sent to me prior to receiving that payment, I'm guessing that the FERS Supplement was NOT considered in calculating the interim payment. Is that normal or should I be concerned??? Is eligibility for the FERS Supplement determined when the case is fully adjudicated? And, will it then be retroactive to the beginning of my annuity? I thought the supplement was to be paid with the regular FERS annunity and would start automatically. Is there something else I should be doing???

Is the FERS Annuity Supplement taxable?

I retired in November 2006 at age 60 under FERS Special. I am receiving $500/month supplement. I think I understand this, but am curious how this will affect my 2007 fed tax. I am working and will go over the earnings test amount so will "lose" the supplement. When will I have to pay this back? My question is about the fed tax effect. Will all my FERS payments, including the supplement, be taxable in 2007? Then do I have to pay back the $6,000 I will receive for 2007 during 2008 and start the process all over again? I can't find any info on how the supplement is recovered by FERS once it's been paid out.

In response to the question: "At 65 do I lose all of my FERS, even if I retire at age 66?"
No. Your FERS Basic retirement benefit is paid for life. This is computed at 1 percent (or 1.1 percent) of your high-three average salary times your years and months of federal service. This is paid by the Office of Personnel Management and is in addition to the supplement (which you may or may not be entitled to, depending on your age and amount of service at retirement).

I understand that the supplemental is lost if I earn over a certain amount but is that forever gone? If I work one year after retirement and not the next is the supplemental then restored in the second year?

I've been reading all this about what who is eligible for when and where and I think its becoming a moot point. The government has been speaking about the looming Social Security Crisis for years now, and many politicos have tremble at the mention of reducing payments to those eligible.
Well, every year around this time, I go through my financials making adjustments, checking on progress or the lack there of. This year I checked EBIS and downloaded the printable PDF file. Upon checking it against last year's and the year's before that, I notice that for the last 3 years consecutively my projected Social Security Entitlement has dropped.
"Say what?!" Yes, I've substantially increased my income and taxes paid and yet decreased in entitlement. I'd like to hear that explained.
I no longer figure there to be all that much left by the time I qualify, I just never had it pointed out so graphically to me.
Tip off.

At 65 do I lose all of my FERS, even if I retire at age 66 ?

My understanding is that Social Security bases its payment on your tracked annual income until retirement or age 62, whichever is later. If a person retires at 60, the last 2 years have $0.00 income, which is weighted more heavily than previous years.
Even though already-earned Social Security would not get reduced, the comparison should be against what the payment would be per Social Security's "normal" model of working until retirement at age 62. Each person needs to compare the gain of FERS before-62 money against the cumulative loss from Social Security money.

To be eligible to receive the supplement, you must be at MRA or older. So if you retire early, you will not receive it. However, would you still be eligible to receive the supplement once you reach MRA, or do you forfeit ever receiving it if you decide to take an early out?
