Return to Article: Chertoff, Democrats agree to weigh border fence alternatives

The only alternative to this fence is a better fence. People forget that the Great Wall of China worked well for quite some time. So did the Roman's Hadrian's Wall. If it funnels the illegal infiltrators to fewer "safe" crossing points, then the Border Patrol can concentrate their manpower there, making arrests easier. There's nothing wrong with technology, but it cannot substitute for simple solutions.

Take away the reason for them coming into this country illegally and they will stop coming! Corporations hiring illegal immigrants should be fined extensively even prison sentences if necessary. Take a hard line and follow through and perhaps the legal citizens of this country will see fewer illegal immigrants and corporations will have to pay a fair wage!

It seems that King fails to see the "people's" true desire. If the people wanted the fence, they would have re-elected those who voted for it in the first place.
What everyone seems to be avoiding is the true solution to this problem. If illegal immigrants can not work legally, they will engage in criminal activity or go home. Criminal activity has its own rewards when the perpetrator is apprehended. Those with morals and ethics will return to their homeland. As the word gets out (no jobs), the only illegal immigrants crossing the border will be those who intend to engage in criminal activity. In that case, the law should consider them criminals upon crossing the border. Thus, the only ones who end up in jail are the ones that would have ended up there anyway, not those just looking at making a somewhat honest living.
Bottom line: Anyone legally conducting business in the United States should be held accountable for ensuring those they hire are legal to this country. The penalty for failure to comply should be very harsh, economically. We don't need them in our jails, too. The fines received should be adequate to pay for greater border patrol (technology or human) and more law enforcement to apprehend criminals.

Chertoff sounded a similar theme, saying: "We think a virtual fence, which includes physical fencing in the appropriate places but also looks to 21st Century technology, is the most cost-effective and quickest and best way to get control of the border."
Someone needs to tell Chertoff about land mines! A fence of landmines would be the most cost-effective and restrictive of all the alternatives. Landmines would save us money and stop infiltration of illegals!

I think Congressman Bennie Thompson should try this "virtual fence," with technology (cameras and sensors), out on his own property first, as a test. And to make things fair, make the nearest cop an hour away. Because "lord how we know" everybody is dying to get into Mississippi!
