Once again, Republican lawmakers twist and distort the truth to take credit they are not due. The GAO is an independent, quasi-governmental, non-partisan agency. Any member of the Congress, Republican, Democrat, or Independent can request a GAO review of any program receiving federal funds. The $6.4 billion represents potential savings from GAO recommendations, little of which will actually be realized without direct congressional action to stop the fraud, waste and abuse and pork barrel giveaways. How much actual savings to the taxpayer will there be? The Republicans do not bother to say, but speaking from personal experience I can assure it will be much, much less.

"The committee has held 256 hearings since the 109th Congress began in January 2005, and has requested Government Accountability Office reports, testimony and briefings 359 times, according to the report. The committee calculated that increased federal revenues and savings totaling $6.4 billion accrued over five years from GAO reports and recommendations it ordered." What a load of crap! How much money did the government spend on those reports, briefings, and hearings, which by the way, are only what has been requested since January 2005, if I'm reading correctly. However, the $6.4 billion accrued revenues/savings covers a five-year period. Where's the proof; I want to see the data that supports these figures and I want that data to fully support the "net savings" to the American taxpayer for a defined time period. Of course, we're never going to see that because first of all that data doesn't exist, and second of all, I'd bet my bottom dollar the numbers would look a whole lot different.
